What is a domain?

A domain is an Internet address under which your website can be reached. Figuratively speaking, it is the address to a property. You give your website a concise, quickly accessible name for a professional appearance.

The first part of a domain name is chosen by the domain owner himself and identifies his project. The part after the "dot" is called Top Level Domain (TLD). The TLD determines in which area the Internet address can be classified topically. We have summarized a more detailed overview of the various possibilities for you.

Generic TLDs

Generic TLDs that are known across countries and do not designate a specific topic or region. With a .COM domain, for example, the commercial character of a website can be shown, whereas .ORG can be used for organizations and .INFO for websites with an informal character.

New TLDs

The high number of worldwide domain registrations led to the creation of more and more TLDs, which designate the content of a website even more precisely. Thus, TLDs can show reference to a city or a very specific topic. For example, .SHOP domains are suitable for online stores, whereas .MUSIC domains are suitable for musicians.

Country-specific TLDs

Almost every country offers its own TLD. So you can express with your domain reference to the geographical location of your Internet presence. For the visitor of the website, the respective country is recognizable at first glance. In Germany, the TLD .DE is widely used, while .AT is used in Austria and .CH in Switzerland.
